will you direct us?
All of my best work, the work that I feel the most connected to and feels the most authentic, has been when I don’t interfere with my couples hardly at all.
It’s a true representation of what is going on and I’m just there to document it in a creative way!
But the reality is, as soon as I put your camera up to your face, it creates a reaction in people. You feel on display. You feel vulnerable. You change. It’s a natural tendency on the part of the photographer to “coach” each couple to help them feel more comfortable, to tell them what to do, where to put their hands, how to interact with each other. Most couples ask for this, they think they need it in order to get through that shy feeling that inevitably overtakes them when being photographed. But as soon as I start posing, we are creating a dependency between you and me.
And before you know it, you have no idea what to do unless I direct you and so ensues the most common form of overposing and underrepresenting a true and tangible version of a person’s natural way of being.
Not receiving direction may sound scary, but here's the thing: when you look at your photos in the future, I want you to remember how you felt in that moment, not some prompt or pose I gave you.
Documenting an experience versus photographing you guys through posing is WAY MORE FUN and it tells your story in a more honest way. Of course, I will be there to give direction if you need it, but I truly hope you two can adventure how you authentically would together.

COUPLES SESSIONS
These shoots are my favorite because they capture you in your entirety. Not all done up for your wedding, in clothes you’ll wear once, with concerns of a hundred different things. It’s just us, creating an experience that I like to draw meaning from. Let’s go to your family’s beach cabin, and take the dogs for a hike where you guys spend your summers. Let’s pack a picnic and go to the top of a mountain! We are going to create a memory to commemorate this moment in your life!
